Piedmont softball splits DH with Huntingdon

By AccessWDUN

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — In their second USA South doubleheader of the weekend on the road, the Piedmont College softball team was forced to settle for a split earlier Sunday as Huntingdon College took game one 1-0 before PC rallied for a 2-1 win in the encore.

It was a pitcher's duel in game one as it was scoreless until the third inning despite the Hawks having three hits in the second inning. The only run of the game came on a play with a pair of errors as Huntingdon's Porter advanced to second on a throwing error, then took third and eventually scored on the play on a second error.

That proved to be all it would take to win the contest as neither team could string together enough hits for another run as the Hawks took a 1-0 decision. SARAH WALKER took the loss despite pitching the complete game without giving up an earned run and allowing only seven hits.

Game two was also a one-run game as the Lady Lions took the 2-1 win after ANNA LEE STONE hit an RBI single in the top of the sixth to score HALEY HIXON with the game-winning run. Piedmont plated a run in the top of the second with two outs as KORY BEST singled followed by AUDREY ESAKOFF reaching on an error allowing Best to score.

The Hawks evened the score in the third as a double and single left runners at the corners and the Hawks' Wade stole home tying the game at one. The game-winning hit came from Stone in the sixth as PC had four of their six hits in the inning.

MELISSA ECKMAN earned her sixth win of the season tossing the complete game with just one earned run and striking out five.
