New statewide program to fight hunger, promote healthy lifestyles to be unveiled in Gainesville

Amerigroup Community Care, a provider of Medicaid managed care benefits, has joined Action Ministries in the effort to fight hunger and promote healthy lifestyles across Georgia.

Amerigroup has sponsored a meal truck that will be used by Action Ministries to deliver free meals to individuals and families in need. The two organizations will be unveiling this new delivery truck during Amerigroup’s Pop-Up Pantry Party tour, a mobile food distribution effort that will travel across Georgia to distribute free meals, host cooking classes, provide free health screenings and promote healthy lifestyles.

The Pop-Up Pantry Party launches its tour in Gainesville Saturday at the East Hall Community Center from 11:00-1:00.  Other stops are planned between now and the end of the month in Columbus, College Park, Macon, Marietta, Savannah, Albany and Augusta.

During each Pop-Up Pantry Party event, attendees will receive free family meal packs and have the opportunity to participate in cooking demonstrations. Clinicians will be onsite to answer questions and offer health tips about various topics such as obesity, diabetes, nutrition and wellness. Additionally, no-cost health screenings, Zumba and fitness demonstrations will be presented to help participants take charge of their health and identify fun ways to jumpstart healthy habits.

“Amerigroup has stayed committed to taking action to tackle our state’s most complex health disparities, and by improving access to healthy meals and health information, we are succeeding in improving health outcomes across our state,” said Urcel R. Fields, president of Amerigroup Georgia. “We are pleased to align our efforts with Action Ministries and look forward to building stronger communities together.”

In addition to special events and meeting critical needs, Action Ministries will engage the Amerigroup-sponsored meal truck to deliver additional free meals to Amerigroup members who receive home delivery services—a value-added benefit offered to qualified Amerigroup Medicaid members.

“Action Ministries is privileged to have Amerigroup join us in the fight to break the cycle of poverty and enhance wellbeing throughout our Georgia communities,” said Action Ministries interim President and CEO Kelley Henderson. “We believe that no family or individual should have to struggle with the burden of hunger or face the insecurity of their next meal.”
