CORNELIA — A staff member at a therapeutic school serving students from 10 North Georgia school systems was treated for injuries after an incident at that facility Wednesday morning.
Cornelia Police Chief Chad Smith said officers were dispatched to a combative student at The FUTURES Program Habersham Center on Elrod Street about 11:20 a.m. Wednesday.
A juvenile student at the school, which serves students in kindergarten through 12th grade, became unruly and caused what Smith called "a considerable amount of property damage."
Cornelia Fire and Habersham Emergency Medical Services personnel also responded due to an injury at the school.
During the incident, "a male staff member was injured and was transported to Habersham Medical Center for treatment of a laceration above his eye," Smith said.
A juvenile complaint was filled out on the student related to the property damage, Smith said.
Because the student involved is a juvenile, no further information will be released about him.
Housed in the former Cornelia Elementary No. 2 building on Elrod Street and operated by Pioneer RESA, The FUTURES Program serves students in the following school systems: Banks, Franklin, Gainesville City, Habersham, Hall, Hart, Lumpkin, Rabun, Stephens and White counties.
The FUTURES Program is part of the Georgia Network for Educational and Therapeutic Supports, and is comprised of 24 programs that support the local school systems' continuum of services for students with disabilities, ages 3-21, the program's website states.
