An Athens firefighter, who worked for a short time for Hall County Fire Services, was killed in an off-duty accident Monday.

Athens-Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services said in a statement to the Athens-Banner Herald that Matt Hughes was helping a friend trim trees when a limb fell and struck him. Athens-Clarke County Police Department Officer Epifanio Rodriguez said the accident occurred in Jackson County, although he did not know a specific location.

Hughes was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, where he died from his injuries.

Hughes worked as a firefighter for Hall County from October 7, 2013 to June 23, 2014, according to the Hall County Human Resources Department. It is unknown how long he was employed by Athens-Clarke County.
