ATLANTA — Jess Simpson's time with Georgia State did not even last through spring practice.
Published reports on Monday say the highly-successful former Buford High football coach is leaving the Panthers, whom he joined in December, to take a position with the Atlanta Falcons.
11Alive news cited multiple sources that the Falcons will hire Simpson as a defensive assistant/defensive line coach.
Atlanta has made several defensive moves since blowing a 25-point second half lead to lose Super Bowl LI, 34-28 to the New England Patriots in overtime. The Falcons fired defensive coordinator Richard Smith and linebackers coach Bryan Cox two days after the Super Bowl loss.
Simpson led Buford to a record of 164-12 and seven state titles and state championship appearances in his 12 years at the helm. He stepped down after the 2016 season following the Wolves' loss to Rome in the Class AAAAA state title game in December.
Less than two weeks later Simpson announced he was taking a defensive assistant position at Georgia State coaching the Panthers defensive line.
