Cleveland driver who struck, killed child facing new, unrelated charges

By Dean Dyer WRWH Radio

CLEVELAND — James Lyn Holcomb of Cleveland is facing additional charges from law enforcement, but the latest are not related to the Jan. 17 death of a 3-year-old White County boy.

The additional charges stem from an incident at the Knights Inn in Cleveland last September, when police were called in reference to a young child wandering alone in the parking lot. Holcomb, his wife and the child were staying at the motel.

Cleveland Police Chief John Foster said Thursday that he received crime lab results from items taken during that September incident and, "they came back positive for methamphetamine."

Foster said trace amounts of the drug were found in Holcomb’s Chevrolet Avalanche, the same vehicle that struck and killed 3-year-old Easton Cain, in the Ingles parking in January.

The Georgia State Patrol charged Holcomb with first-degree vehicular homicide, along with others charges, in the Ingles incident.

According to Foster, the two new warrants were taken Thursday, charging Holcomb with possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug-related objects.

Foster said the district attorney may decide to charge Holcomb's wife later. Thursday's charges were because the drugs and related items were found in Holcomb's truck.

A backlog of work at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation State Crime Lab resulted in the delay in Cleveland police getting the test results.
