Public invited to hear Columbia University occupational therapy professor speak at Brenau

By AccessWDUN staff

Dr. Glen Gillen, a national leader in occupational therapy, will speak to Brenau University students and faculty and the public at 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, at the Brenau Downtown Center.

Each year the School of Occupational Therapy at the Gainesville school invites a national scholar to meet with faculty and students about research, education and important issues within the profession of occupational therapy. Additionally, the scholar gives a presentation to the university and the community.

Gillen is a professor at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and a recipient of numerous national awards. He has published more than 100 works, including textbooks for occupational therapy educational programs.

Gillen lectures extensively on the local, state, national and university level regarding multiple topics related to neurorehabilitation. His presentation Friday will focus on cognitive and perceptual assessments for occupational based practice.

This is a special year for the annual event, according to Brenau officials, which is now dubbed the Boyt Schell Occupational Science Scholar Series. Upon her retirement last May, Dr. Barb Schell, professor emeritus, established an endowed fund to support this ongoing event.

Wendy Holmes, interim director of the School of Occupational Therapy, said “it is an honor” to host Gillen as the Boyt Schell Occupational Science Scholar for 2017.

“This is a valuable opportunity for students from the Brenau OT programs to visit with a national scholar and educator within the profession of occupational therapy,” Holmes said. “He will meet with OT students to discuss OT interventions for persons with cognitive challenges and learn about their graduate research studies. His presentation to the university and community on Friday, Feb. 17, will be a fascinating highlight of his research and occupational therapy practice in neurorehabilitation."

The event is free and open to the public, and a reception will follow.
