Man dies in Christmas Day fire in Forsyth County

By B.J. Williams
Authorities in Forsyth County are working to identify a man who was killed in a Christmas Day fire.

Fire Services Division Chief Jason Shivers said the fire was reported at 4:15 a.m. by neighbors living on the property on Knight Road in the northeastern part of the county.

Shivers said the victim's body was found in the rubble of the burned building.

"The building had already started to collapse when they [fire crews] arrived on the scene," Shivers said. "During the salvage and overhaul operations, they did in fact identify and find a body."

Shivers said the building, which was being used as a home, was actually an old chicken house that had been converted into a storage unit and was not built for living purposes.

"The family that called 911 that lived in a camper-style trailer adjacent to this home owned the property," Shivers said. "[The family] had taken this gentleman under their wing and was letting him live there. We have not yet been able to confirm any solid identity or find any next of kin."

Shivers said it will be difficult to determine a cause for the fire because there was so little left of the structure.
