Unemployment insurance claims down in Gainesville, most of Georgia

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor

First-time claims for unemployment insurance in Georgia decreased in November in Gainesville and most of the state when compared to a year ago.

State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler says applications were down in Gainesville 25.3 percent.  The state, meanwhile, saw an overall decrease of 11.2 percent.

Athens and Atlanta also showed decreases of 63.5 and 8.3 percent, respectively.   Of the 14 Metropolitan Statistical Areas in Georgia, nine showed a decline in the number of claims and five an increase.  Compared to November a year ago, claims were down 9.9 percent.  Butler cites fewer temporary applications in manufacturing for the decrease.
