CLARKESVILLE — A surveyor attempting to locate a monument near a home on Ga. 115, Demorest, found a suspicious device in a wooded area of the property near a creek Monday morning.
That device turned out to be an explosive.
Habersham County sheriff’s deputies responded to the report of a white PVC pipe at the location just after 11:15 a.m., secured the area and notified the GBI’s bomb disposal unit, according to Sheriff’s Lt. Matt Wurtz.
“The GBI bomb unit responded to the scene and collected and disposed of the item,” Wurtz said in a statement.
Asked by AccessWDUN for further information about the device, Wurtz said, “I just got off the phone with the GBI bomb unit that responded to the earlier incident, and they have informed me that the device contained material and was assembled in a manner that is commonly known as a pipe bomb.”
