Sheriff releases identity of man found dead in Lake Hartwell

HARTWELL — Hart County Sheriff Mike Cleveland on Thursday released the name of the man found dead in Lake Hartwell Tuesday afternoon.

“The drowning victim found on Nov. 27 has been identified as Alex Dunne, 23, of Athens,” Cleveland said Thursday.

A fisherman reported what appeared to be a body floating in the Powerbag area of Lake Hartwell off Old 29 mid-afternoon Tuesday.

The body was recovered, and investigators spent hours on the scene looking for evidence connected to the death.

“At this time, there are no apparent signs of foul play,” Cleveland said Thursday.

The case remains under investigation by the Hart County Sheriff’s Office and GBI.

Dunne’s body was taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation State Crime Lab in Decatur.
