THOMASTON — A per Georgia High School Association by-law 4.39, a "universal" coin flip was conducted by the GHSA on Tuesday to determine which part of the bracket would be “home” in the Class 2A through 7A semifinals.
Of course, the coin flip only applies if the two competing teams are equal seeds AND both schools meet the GHSA requirements for hosting a semifinal contest (see page 73 of the 2017-18 GHSA Constitution).
GHSA Executive Director Robin Hines conducted the coin toss on Tuesday and it came up “heads” meaning that the team in the TOP half of the official GHSA playoff bracket will be the designated home team.
For teams in the northeast Georgia area, the coin flip only affected Jefferson in Class 4A and Buford in Class 5A. Both teams, based on the remaining seeded-teams in the quarterfinal rounds in their respective classifications, will be hitting the road in the semifinals no matter which teams they face.
Rabun County in Class 2A and North Gwinnett in Class 7A will both be at home in the semifinal round no matter which teams advance if they win on Friday night.
This is only for games between equal seeds. In all other cases, the higher-seeded team will host as usual.
