Holbrook said police initially got a call about a suspicious person, which was later changed to a domestic dispute - a woman being dragged - the Burger King on Athens Street. When responding officers arrived, the officers intervened and proceed to get in an altercation with the male subject, Tovar.
At that point, Holbrook said the female subject, Rodriguez, approached the officers. "The female, who the officer was originally there to assist, to protect... the one that he was called there too because she was being drug (sic) actually came up behind the officer and pistol whipped him in the back of the head."
A back up officer arrived and the two attempted to flee. As the officer exited his vehicle, he was engaged in gunfire with Tovar and/or Rodriguez. "Our officer did return gunfire to the subjects. The individuals left the scene on foot and that's led us to where we are now," Holbrook said.
Several law enforcement agencies took part in the search for suspects. During the late evening and overnight, police took to social media urging residents be alert, lock doors and report any suspicious activity.
Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents arrived early Saturday morning to lead the investigation.
Prior to releasing names, police had described the male suspect as Hispanic with longer hair, wearing a black leather jacket and blue jeans.
Two officers were transported to northeast Georgia Medical Center following the gunfire. They received minor injuries during the altercation. Both have been released from the hospital and are with their families.
"Our officers are safe and doing well. They received only minor injuries. Please continue to pray for them. Many times in situations such as this the emotional pain is worse than the physical pain," a department Facebook post stated overnight.
