Gainesville planning board recommends annexation and zoning for Memorial Park Drive apartments

By Caleb Hutchins Assistant News Director

The Gainesville Planning and Appeals Board has recommended the annexation of a property on Memorial Park Drive that developers hope to build apartment units on.

The property is just under one acre and sits on the northwest corner of the intersection of Memorial Park Drive and Old Flowery Branch Road on the southwest side of the city. The applicant, Chris Patton, is asking to zone the land as Residential-II, which would allow for the nine small apartment units he and the property owner are looking to build.

The development was planned to have access from Memorial Park Drive, but city planners have asked that the developers also build a full access driveway onto Old Flowery Branch Road, which is also the side of the property that the units' parking is planned to be placed.

The annexation and zoning request was recommended unanimously and no one spoke in opposition to the proposed development. The request will now go to the Gainesville City Council for final approval. The next scheduled work session for the council is on November 30.

The property is bordered by the Gainesville city limits by Memorial Park Funeral Home to its south and the land across Memorial Park Drive to its east.
