Substitute teacher 'no longer serving' following simple battery charge in Gainesville

A substitute teacher charged with simple battery is no longer serving the Gainesville City School System, according to a statement from school officials.

Gainesville Police charged Clindon Thomas Middleton, 29, with simple battery following an alleged incident at Gainesville Middle School last week.  Middleton was booked into the Hall County Jail on Monday and has since been released, according to jail records.

"GPD was immediately made aware of the situation by the school system and began an investigation," Police Sgt. Kevin Holbrook wrote in an email.  "He allegedly utilized inappropriate physical tactics on two students."

A police department incident/investigation report didn't detail what the alleged tactics involved.

According to the statement from the school system, officials were notified of the two incidents on Wednesday, November 1.

"District and school officials conducted an investigation, communicated with families, and reported the incidents to DFCS and Gainesville Police Department," the statement reads.  "The substitute teacher is no longer serving GCSS."

An attorney was not listed for Middleton in the county's comprehensive justice information system, according to the Hall County Sheriff's Office.

The case remained under investigation on Tuesday, Holbrook said.
