Woman, child recovering from injuries sustained in Halloween night incident in Statham

By B.J. Williams

A woman and a 5-year-old child are recovering from serious injuries they sustained when they were hit by a van on Halloween night in downtown Statham.

The Georgia State Patrol said a trooper responded to the intersection of Jefferson Street and Railroad Street around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday to investigate the collision.

The initial investigation found that a 2010 Chrysler Town and Country van driven by Jeffery Craig, 47, of Statham was traveling north on Jefferson Street when it struck Katlin Bentley, 29, and William Harvey, 5. Both are from Bogart.

The trooper said both pedestrians were walking in a marked crosswalk at the time of the incident.

Bentley was taken to Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital for treatment, while Harvey was airlifted to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta-Egleston Hospital.

A GoFundMe page set up for the pair described the extent of the injuries to Bentley and Harvey, who apparently are mother and son.

Bentley sustained a broken ankle that will require surgery, a broken rib and a concussion. The child, who goes by the name Kross, remains hospitalized with a fractured eye socket, severe road rash that may require skin grafts and possible muscle damage. The GoFundMe page said the child will undergo more tests to determine the full extent of his injuries.

According to the investigating trooper, Craig has so far been charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
