Indians run over Lakeview in key 8-A showdown

By AccessWDUN

HIAWASSEE — Towns County pounded out 376 yards rushing and 22 first downs and used a 35-point second quarter to blow open a close game en route to a stunning 56-13 win over Lakeview Academy Friday night.

It was a pivotal game for both teams, who came into the contest on the playoff bubble in the Class A power rankings. Lakeview came in 28th in the Private rankings and needed a win to try and climb back into the top 24. The Indians came in 23rd in the Public rankings but were just .01 points ahead the 24th-place team.

Towns County (4-5, 3-5 Region 8-A) had four players with 50 or more yards rushing, led by Zach Daveport, who finished with 154 yards and two touchdowns on just 8 carries. Cole Ledford had 75 yards and three scores on 10 carries while Andy Chambers had 80 yards on just 9 carries for the game.

And while the Towns County offense was grinding out the yards, the Indians defense was shutting down Lakeview (2-7, 1-7) quarterback Alec Bornhorst, who was held to just 139 yards on a dismal 5-of-16 performance with one interception. Bornhorst did toss a pair of touchdown passes but none in the second half.

The win for the Indians not only should help boost their playoff chances but also gives them the most wins in a season since 2013 and just the fourth time in program history they have tallied four victories. A win next week over Providence Christian (1-8, 1-7) would give them just their second non-losing season  in program history. Towns County has had just one winning season in its history, a 7-3 mark in 2008 playing a non-region schedule.
