GDOT project in McEver Road-Dawsonville Highway shopping district to be complete by month's end

By B.J. Williams

Any motorist who has ever tried to venture across the four lanes of traffic on McEver Road between the McEver Corners Shopping Center and the Village Shoppes of Gainesville knows it's risky business. By the end of this month, though, that dangerous intersection will be completely revamped by the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) spokeswoman Katie Strickland told AccessWDUN this week that the department has heard for a long time that the area is congested and dangerous.

"There's been years and years of crashes there, so that obviously brought this to our attention and we're getting it fixed," Strickland said.

The fix, according to Strickland, is something called an R-CUT.

"An R-CUT is actually an acronym...and it stands for restricted crossing u-turn," Strickland said. "This means there will only be right ins and right outs from the Kohl's [at McEver Corners] there on McEver at Dawsonville Highway. This will not allow folks to leave the Publix [at Village Shoppes of Gainesville] and drive across the four lanes of McEver."

Strickland said the motorists exiting McEver Corners Shopping Center onto McEver will have to turn right and proceed to the next median break and make a u-turn to get back to Dawsonville Highway.

Strickland said GDOT crews should be finished pouring concrete for the project by Wednesday, October 25.

"They will follow up with striping, but as soon as the concrete is cured, traffic operations will change," Strickland said.
