A.B. Sailors, former Gainesville fire chief, dies at 83

A former chief for the Gainesville Fire Department died Monday at the age of 83.

Alonzo Brantley “A.B.” Sailors, Jr., was a Gainesville native who graduated from Gainesville High School in 1954. Sailors served two years in the U.S. Army, spending 21 months in West Berlin where he was a medic. 

He graduated from the National Fire Academy in Emmetsburg, Maryland in 1981. Sailors was employed with the Gainesville Fire Department for 34 years. He served as a captain for 18 years and later advanced to Chief before he retired in 1991.

Funeral services for Sailors will be held Thursday, January 26 at 1 p.m. at the Chapel of Memorial Park North Riverside in Gainesville.
