Hall County schools urge community participation in Constitution Initiative

By B.J. Williams
Schools in Hall County are making another push for the community to participate in the district's so-called Constitution Initiative introduced this past November.

Superintendent Will Schofield commented after Monday night's school board meeting, saying the goal is to make the community the most "constitutionally literate" in the country. So far, he said, the effort is going well.

"In the last week or so, the technology department told me we had between 12 and 13,000 visitors [to the website] from 19 to 20 different countries," Schofield said.

"We've had several thousand people sign the pledge and several thousand individuals take the course."

The goal now is to get business partners of the various schools in the Hall County District to help with a community push toward Constitutional literacy.

He said the recent election and inauguration show that Americans need to understand the basics of the US Constitution.

"The course that we've put together...actually begins with the Articles of Confederation and goes into the Declaration of Independence and then the Constitution of the United States," Schofield said. "The fact of the matter is, we live in a day and time when probably a significant majority of the electorate in this country is not familiar with those documents. That ought to be unsettling for all of us."

The online petition is still available for signatures and the online course is free and open to the community.
