Sugar Hill city council mulls land annexation that could be used for new trail

Sugar Hill city council is considering the annexation of a piece of land along Suwanee Dam Road that could be useful for the city's new trail system.

The 2.42-acre parcel of land is located adjacent to the Sugar Hill Golf Club and Gary Pirkle Park.

"We've assembled two pieces of property over there in the last year, and it backs up to some Gwinnett County property that was our old water and sewer treatment plant," said Paul Radford, city manager, in a phone interview.

The piece of land could be used as an exit for the Sugar Loop Greenway, a 16.5-mile multi-use trail that will eventually circle the city.

"That's one potential exit point that would then connect to Gary Pirkle Park," said Radford.

The first three legs of the trail will be completed in 2017 at a cost of $7 million.

Council will give the annexation request a final vote on Monday, Jan. 9.
