As the state of Georgia moves forward on the new Exit 13 off I-985, the Georgia Department of Transportation is working to acquire right of way for the project.

There's a small piece of property DOT wants that is near Martin Elementary School.

Hall County School Superintendent Will Schofield told school board members at a Monday evening meeting that the property is less than a half-acre and it doesn't really impact the school, but it does from Atlanta Highway, and that's why the state needs it.

"They've [DOT] made us an offer and we don't think that offer is market value, so we're going to negotiations with them and see where we land," Schofield said.

Schofield did not publicly say what amount the DOT offered for the property, nor did he say what counter-offer the school system will put on the table.

The county would construction deceleration lanes and make other improvements at the intersection of Jim Hood and Odum Smallwood Roads.

The board gave Schofield the go-ahead to work with the country on what property the county might need to accomplish their project goals. Schofield said that process would take place quickly, but he said the actual construction timeline is up to the county.
