A suspect faces a list of charges for allegedly attempting to steal merchandise from the Wal-mart on Mundy Mill Road in Oakwood, then brandishing a box cutter when a store manager confronted him.
Talford Johnson, 59, went into the store around 11:30 Monday night, and loaded up a shopping cart with a 55-inch TV, alcoholic beverages and other merchandise, according to Sgt. Danny Sridej, Oakwood Police investigator.
As Johnson tried to exit the store with his cart-load of items, a store manager confronted him and asked to see a receipt for proof of purchase.
"(Johnson) pulled out a box cutter, and tried to swing and cut the manager. That's when a witness ran and tried to get help," said Sridej in a phone interview.
An officer happened to be on scene, answering a different call in the same parking lot, and came over to prevent Johnson from getting into his car and fleeing the scene.
"When (Johnson) tried reaching for his box cutter, that's when officers pepper sprayed him," said Sridej.
Aside from the pepper spray on Johnson, nobody was hurt in the incident.
Johnson is charged with aggravated assault, obstruction of an officer, armed robbery and theft.
