A Braselton surgeon - Dr. Brent A. Sharpe - recently completed the state's first ever outpatient robotic prostatectomy.
The procedure took place on August 30, 2016, according to a press release.
The patient was 68 year old man who underwent the minimally invasive surgery for localized prostate cancer. Standard robotic prostatectomy patients are required to spend 1-2 days in the hospital; however, Dr. Sharpe’s patient was able to be discharged in fewer than eight hours to recover in the comfort of his own home.
“It is our hope that patients and their families who are able to undergo Outpatient Robotic Prostatectomy will experience improved outcomes, a decrease in the complications associated with hospital admission and be less inconvenienced by their prostate cancer treatment," Sharpe said.
Sharpe has performed more than 550 standard robotic procedures and began offering robotic outpatient procedures to women over one year ago.
Sharpe is also the first Georgia surgeon to use a specialized biological graft, called Surgigraft, which is made from amniotic membrane. Surgigraft enhances healing by providing critical extracellular matrix proteins to the surgical site that reduce the response to injury therefore, reducing scar formation and inflammation; it also enhances healing.
“Surgigraft has many applications and it has been proven to accelerate the return of continence and potency after robotic prostatectomy. We hope this new biological graft will enhance our extensive rehabilitation program for men who are undergoing robotic prostatectomy," Sharpe said.
