Falcons sign former GHS, Bama standout Blake Sims

By Jeff Hart Sports Reporter

FLOWERY BRANCH — It took nearly 18 months but Blake Sims will finally get his long sought-after shot in the NFL.

According to both ESPN and AL.com, the former Gainesville High and Alabama standout was signed by the Atlanta Falcons on Tuesday.

However, it was not at quarterback, where he led the Red Elephants to a state title appearance in 2009 and the Crimson Tide to the first College Football Playoff semifinals in 2015.

The Falcons signed Sims as a running back to the practice squad.

Sims worked out for the Falcons last Friday. To sign Sims, the Falcons waived practice squad running back Gus Johnson.

Sims did not get selected in the 2015 NFL Draft and later tried to hook on with a CFL team but did not make the roster for any teams.
