Assistance from the Hall County Sheriff's Office Dive Team Thursday allowed the Banks County Sheriff's Office to recover a vehicle reported stolen in the late 1990s.
"Banks County Sheriff’s Office received a report from a local citizen that a large object, believed to be a vehicle, was in Commerce Watershed Lake," said Sheriff's Lt. Carissa McFaddin. "The citizen, who conducts sonar searches as a hobby, contacted our office after locating this suspicious item. Sheriff Speed then requested assistance from the Hall County Dive Team, who responded and confirmed the object to be a vehicle."
McFaddin said the 1989 Honda Accord was located in around nine to 10 feet of water about 20 to 25 feet from the shore.
The car, found unoccupied, was removed from the lake Thursday afternoon and the owner was contacted.
"It was quite evident by the condition of the vehicle that it had been in the lake for a long period of time," McFaddin said.
