HELEN — Helen leaders are gearing up for the city's second-annual "Day in the Park" celebration of area military veterans.
The event is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, at the pavilion at Helen Riverside Park on Edelweiss Strasse in Helen.
"The free cookout of hamburgers, hotdogs and all the fixings is held in honor and appreciation of our military veterans and their families for the services rendered to ensure our nation's freedom," said Helen City Manager Jerry Elkins. "We invite and encourage all veterans and their families to come out and enjoy lunch and fellowship with us in Helen."
Area veterans who plan to attend are asked to call as soon as possible with their intentions.
"There is no charge for the event, however we ask that you call the Helen Arts and Heritage Center at (706) 878-3933 and let us know how many in your party will be attending, in order that we can prepare an adequate amount of food," said Nancy Ackerman, president of the arts center.
Members of the Helen Arts and Heritage Center will provide desserts for the event.
