Humane Society volunteers become kennel "inmates" for National Dog Day

By Caleb Hutchins Assistant News Director

Volunteers at the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia used an unusual tactic to raise money for kennel animals for National Dog Day Friday.

In an emailed release, the society said participants locked themselves inside kennels with a dog as "inmates" until a certain bail goal was met in the organization's first ever "Adoption Angel Lock In" fundraiser. Volunteers said the experience also gave them a chance to see what life is like for the animals in kennels.

"This event was so eyeopening. We only sat in the kennels for a few hours and these dogs are in here for 23 hours most days," Julie Edwards, executive director of the organization said. "It just shows you how important it is to find them their forever homes!"

According to the release, the Humane Society had hoped to collect $10,000 during the fundraiser, but said they quickly surpassed that goal and eventually raised over $25,000. Edwards said the funds raised will allow them to set all of their dogs' adoption fees at $0, which she said will increase their chances of finding an owner.
