GAINESVILLE — Gainesville's normally-potent offense was held to just 131 yards on Friday night, as Alpharetta pulled away with a 28-7 rain-soaked win at City Park.
The Red Elephants (1-1) were looking to build on last week's season-opening win but could not sustain some early momentum, as Alpharetta's blitzing defense took control -- especially in the second half, as Gainesville managed just 13 total yards and one first down after the interval.
Gainesville quarterback DJ Irons did pass for 102 yards but was harassed in the backfield and thrown for minus-7 yards rushing.
Meanwhile Alpharetta quarterback Matthew Downing finished 22 of 32 though the air for 270 yards and three touchdowns.
Gainesville will look to bounce back against Clarke Central next week.
