CLEVELAND — A 15-year-old boy was seriously injured Monday night as a result of a bicycle accident on ABC Drive in Cleveland.
The crash occurred in the area behind White County Middle School.
Cleveland Police Chief John Foster said it appears that the youth had left Mountain Education Center School and was going down a hill on the road.
"He may have had a malfunction on his bicycle," Foster said. "We're not sure right now. He left the righthand side of the road, went airborne for 20-25 feet, and hit down in the creek."
The chief said there are several large rocks in the area where the accident occurred and the teen possibly suffered severe head injuries.
According to Chief Foster, two boys discovered the accident after 7:30 p.m.
There were a couple of boys walking by and heard him call out, asking for help, and they checked on him, located him and then called 9-1-1, Foster said. It's believed the victim had been in the ravine for about two hours.
White County Fire and Cleveland Fire personnel, along with White County Emergency Medical Services personnel, got the victim out and he was transported to the Atlanta Medical Center by a medical helicopter.
Officials are not sure exactly when the accident occurred, but they believe it happened around 5:30 p.m.
The teen's name has not been released yet.
The accident remains under investigation by Cleveland Police Department.
