Dilapidated tennis courts need repairs says Hall County School Board

Repairs are being scheduled for several Hall County area tennis courts and a learning annex is being added to Johnson High School.

These were two of the topics discussed at the Hall County School Board meeting on Monday.

In total, 30 tennis courts are expected to receive a resurfacing sometime within the next two years.

“If the courts are in bad shape, we need to get them repaired,” said Nath Morris, Chairman of the Hall County Board of Education. “For our kids and for our community.”

The first courts on the docket are at Alberta Banks Park and Spout Springs Sports Complex next to Flowery Branch High School. These are the courts that are in the most disrepair.

The Hall County School Board has an agreement with the Hall County Commission to share these facilities with the communities, as well as the schools, which leads to heavy usage.

As part of the agreement, the school board and commission will split the cost of repairs which is currently estimated at $60,000 for the first two facilities.

JOHNSON ENROLLMENT UP

The new learning annex at Johnson High will be a renovated version of the former International Center that is located next to the high school.

Even though the plans were put in place before the start of the school year, an increase of 162 students at Johnson High (1,605 total students) caught Hall County Superintendent Will Schofield a little off guard and made the additional annex even more important.

“We’ve added significant classroom space (at Johnson High),” Schofield said. “It’s a good thing because Johnson was one of our minor surprises this year in that we saw an additional 150 to 160 students the first couple days of school.”

A $30,000 SPLOST request was presented at Monday’s meeting to help aid in renovations for the annex.
