Rangers with the state Department of Natural Resources have recovered the body of a Florida man who went missing on August 6 after reportedly being hit by a boat on Lake Lanier.

According to the DNR spokesman Mark McKinnon, rangers located the body of 23-year-old Kevin Theodore Husum on Sunday morning while conducting a shore sweep near Three Sisters Island.

"Rangers and deputies had been searching for Mr. Husum since the incident last weekend, using sonar for the first several days and then performing surface and shore sweeps twice daily," he said. "The DNR Aviation Unit also flew the area regularly as part of the search effort."

The Panama City resident's body will be sent to the GBI crime lab for further investigation.

On the date of the incident, Hall County Fire Captain Zachary Brackett said crews were called to the scene at Three Sisters Island in the middle of the lake's south end at about 5:55 p.m. in reference to a possible drowning.

"[It was] a subject who had reportedly been hit by a boat," he explained. "Our units responded and actively searched for the male subject for approximately an hour."

Forsyth County authorities also participated in the initial search effort.

Brackett said both counties turned the search effort over to the Georgia DNR, who took the lead on the remainder of the investigation.

In an email sent to local media two days after Husum's disappearance, McKinnon identified the operator of the boat as Kenneth Toller of Cumming. McKinnon said Toller is charged with Boating Under the Influence.

DNR Maj. Stephen Adams said in an email that an accident reconstruction will take place to help authorities determine exactly what happened during the incident, although it is expected to take "several weeks" to complete.

Brackett also said one of the divers was injured during the initial search. That diver was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center and is in good condition.
