Gwinnett Police charge 16-year-old for threats made against Mall of Georgia

A 16-year-old male, whose identity will not be released, now faces a misdemeanor charge of harassing communications for threats made against the Mall of Georgia.

The threats, which were made in an online gaming chat room, indicated the suspect would "shoot up" the mall Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.

Police got a tip from another user in the chat room Monday afternoon.

In response, police dispatched a number of uniformed and undercover officers to the mall Tuesday afternoon, but later determined that the mall was in no immediate danger.

The teen, who lives in Gwinnett County and attends a public high school, will remain in his parents' custody, according to Cpl. Michele Pihera.

"The lead investigator in this case does not believe that juvenile court would authorize taking him into custody," said Pihera in a phone interview.

Authorities did not release any other identifying information on the teen, including his name, school or city of residence.

Pihera said the investigation is ongoing.
