Gwinnett County police are investigating a homicide case that involved a Buford man allegedly beating his father to death in the driveway of their home Wednesday evening.
Officers were initially dispatched to the Buford-area home on Bridle Glen Drive near Highway 20 in response to an apparent domestic dispute, according to Gwinnett police Cpl. Michele Pihera. The 911 call was said to have been made by a neighbor who claimed to have witnessed the event.
Pihera said the unnamed suspect, who reportedly carried out the fatal beating with the use of a crowbar, then re-entered the home and informed his step-mother of the crime.
"She also called 911," Pihera said. "When officers arrived, the suspect was outside and was immediately taken into custody."
Investigators on scene quickly determined that the assault was committed shortly after the suspect became engaged in an argument with the victim.
The suspect was transported from the scene to Gwinnett County police headquarters, where Pihera said officers would conduct a preliminary interview.
"While waiting with the transporting officer, he punched the female officer in the face," Pihera continued. "The officer suffered from facial injuries and an ambulance was called."
That officer is expected to recover from her injuries.
Pihera noted that the suspect is "an ex-convict," although she said investigators were unaware of "where he served time or what he served time for."
The suspect was transported from police headquarters to the Gwinnett County Jail following the preliminary interview.
The names of those involved in the case are being withheld at this time pending notification of next-of-kin.
