VIDEO: Oakwood police looking for thieves of rare plant

By Caleb Hutchins Assistant News Director

Oakwood authorities are looking for a man and woman who are suspected of stealing a valuable foreign plant from a package store last month.

According to a release from the Oakwood Police Department, surveillance video shows the two suspects taking the plant from the outside of Lanier Package Store on Mundy Mill Road just before 7:00 p.m. on May 30.

According to the release, the plant holds "sentimental and religious value" and originates from Cambodia. The plant, known as the Pror Teal Angko Chim, is said to bring good luck to its owner. Authorities say the price to replace the plant would be around $1,500.

The male suspect is described as being white, in his 40s, between 5'6'' and 5'7'' and is seen in the video walking with a limp. The female suspect is described as white, in her 30s and between 5'3'' and 5'6'', wearing a black, sleeveless blouse. Oakwood Police Sergeant Danny Sridej says he doesn't think the suspects knew what the plant was when they stole it.

"I think the perpetrators saw this unusual plant that you would never see at a Home Depot or Lowe's or any nursery," Sridej said. "So they said 'wow that's a nice, interesting plant, let's take it.'"

The video shows the two suspects driving away from the store in a red Toyota Camry. Anyone with information on the suspects is asked to contact the Oakwood Police Department.
