Gainesville 'Beat the Heat' campaign underway; seeks donations for fans for senior citizens

By AccessWDUN staff

The ‘Beat the Heat’ Summer Fan program, sponsored by the Gainesville-Hall County Senior Life Center, is now underway.

Department Director Phillippa Lewis Moss says that older adults need to “chill out” this summer by drinking plenty of water and creating a comfortable temperature in their homes.

“Heat stroke can impact anyone, but seniors who live in older homes without central air conditioning are particularly vulnerable”, says Moss.  When paired with other medical conditions, the effect of heat stroke on an older adult can be devastating.  Moss says that some older adults who have air conditioning resist the temptation to run it because it creates higher electric bills.

For two decades now the Community Service Center has partnered with Gainesville-Hall County residents in the community to keep senior citizens safe during the hot summer months.

Donations for fans may be sent to the Community Service Center at 430 Prior Street, S.E. Gainesville, GA 30501. Just write “fan program” in the subject line of the check. For more information call 770.503.3330.
