Georgia makes most of Florida State errors in 5-4 WCWS win

By The Associated Press

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Somehow, Georgia keeps pulling upsets.

An unearned run in the top of the seventh inning gave the Bulldogs a 5-4 win over Florida State on Thursday in the Women's College World Series.

Georgia, the lowest seed in the series, took advantage of seven errors by the Seminoles that tied a World Series record. The way Georgia scored the winning run was fitting — Cortni Emanuel reached on an error, stole second, advanced to third on an error and scored when Alyssa DiCarlo grounded out.

The 16th-seeded Bulldogs (46-18), who got to Oklahoma City by knocking off No. 1 seed Florida in the Super Regionals, provided enough support for pitcher Chelsea Wilkinson.

"I can't say enough about my offense and my defense just having my back," Wilkinson said. "We pick each other up. Some days our pitching just shuts them down, and some days we have to keep hitting and that's exactly what they did."

The eighth-seeded Seminoles (53-9) committed just one error in five NCAA Tournament games before Thursday.

"I don't know the last time we've put errors like that up on the board, but yet still have a chance in the sixth and seventh," Florida State coach Lonni Alameda said. "So I think there's a lot of positive things we can pull from it, and now it's just really understanding the pitch-by-pitch in process part at the highest level. I think that's the one challenge that's up for us right now."

Florida State scored in the first inning when Jessica Warren knocked the ball over the center-field fence to make it 2-0. Georgia rallied with two unearned runs in the second, and the Bulldogs got their bats going in the third when DiCarlo and Tina Iosefa hit RBI singles to give Georgia a 4-2 lead.

Florida State's Alex Powers cranked a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to tie it before the Seminoles' mistakes finally caught up with them in the top of the seventh.

Wilkinson put down Seminoles in order in the bottom of the seventh.

"When she was mixing her speeds and spinning the ball, just did an outstanding job, and I was really proud of her for wanting that last out of the game," Georgia coach Lu Harris-Champer said.

Florida State's Jessica Burroughs, the Atlantic Coach Conference pitcher of the year, was pulled in the top of the third when she allowed singles to the first two batters. Meghan King got the loss in relief.

The Seminoles say they will be ready for their elimination game Saturday.

"The one game doesn't reflect the journey of the season, of the team," Alameda said. "We just got caught up in the emotional part of it, and I'm pretty certain we'll bounce back and be better for it."
