The body found in Lake Lanier has been confirmed to be that of a missing Gainesville woman.
The body was identified as Lizeth Ruiz, 23, on Monday by Gainesville Police Sgt. Kevin Holbrook.
"It has been positively identified as that of Lizeth, who we had been looking for for just over a week," Holbrook said. "She went missing from Lanier Point Park and unfortunately we did not have a lot of details to go on, however, we did not necessarily think that foul play was suspected."
Holbrook said the autopsy indicated Ruiz died from accidental drowning.
"There's been very much speculation throughout the community as far as what happened to her, what led up to her disappearance," said Holbrook. "It was the result of an accidental drowning. We knew from family accounts she did not know how to swim."
Ruiz was last seen in the Lanier Point Park area, where she was recreating with friends, on May 18. Her body was pulled from the waters near that area on May 28.
