Gainesville city council to hold second public hearing on proposed housing project

By Brian Stewart

A second, and possibly final, public hearing is set for Tuesday for a proposal that would bring a new 260-unit development to replace the current Atlanta Street apartments.

Gainesville city council will hold the hearing during their regular voting meeting Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Gainesville Justice Center on Queen City Parkway.

No residents spoke against the proposal at the first public hearing on May 3, and Councilman Sam Coullvion referred to the new development as a "slam-dunk."

Gainesville officials expect to have all the current residents moved by the fall, with the development process moving forward in 2017.

The new living spaces will include five buildings, with one set aside for seniors (approximately 90 of the 260 units).

There will also be a fitness center, community garden, playground and laundry room located inside the complex.

Gainesville planning staff has recommended approval of the project.
