UPDATE: New details in armed robbery suspect apprehension in South Hall

By AccessWDUN Staff

New details have emerged following a confusing hour with multiple law enforcement departments and the suspect in a manhunt.

Gainesville Deputy Police Chief Jay Parrish said the suspect was Anthony Shivers, 31, of Flowery Branch. Previously, the suspect was identified as Shivers, and then thought to be someone else.

"It's the same guy. We got some clarification, Anthony Shivers was wanted already by Hall County deputies for an armed robbery that occurred over the weekend," said Parrish. "

Wednesday around noon, Parrish said Shivers robbed a Kangaroo gas station at Industrial Boulevard and Queen City Parkway.

Parrish said the clerk gave officers a description and they encountered the vehicle shortly after. The suspect vehicle evaded officers when they tried to initiated a traffic stop, leading to the chase. Several traffic violations occured during the chase, including the suspect vehicle hitting another vehicle. No one was injured in that incident.

The suspect vehicle continued to flee, but the vehicle was abandoned in the Tumbling Creek Road area, near Lanier Charter Career Academy, when Shivers ran on foot.

"The subject jumped out of his car and ran in to the wood line behind University of North Georgia, Oakwood (Gainesville)," said Parrish.

Contrary to previous reports, Shivers remained in the wood line of the school and did not enter any buildings.

"He was down in the woods the whole time," said Parrish.

Parrish said in an update that Shivers was apprehended by a canine in the woods. He now faces armed robbery, fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, failure to obey traffic control device, failure to maintain lane, speeding and hit and run charges in addition to the outstanding warrants he faced for armed robbery and probation violation.

During the search for the suspect, the University of North Georgia's Gainesville campus was locked down, and so were several Hall County schools. School system spokesman Gordon Higgins said in addition to LCCA, Johnson High School, the Jones Elementary campus, the Academies of Discovery and the International Center on the Johnson High campus, all were placed on lockdown. He said law enforcement notified the school system about the situation immediately and no students were ever in danger during the duration of the search.

The lockdowns at the schools were lifted just before 1 p.m.
