Habersham County house destroyed by Sunday fire

CORNELIA -- A home on Mud Creek Road near Cornelia was destroyed by fire Sunday afternoon.

"At approximately 4 o'clock we were paged out to a possible structure fire with entrapment on Mud Creek Road," said Habersham County Fire Chief Jeff Cain Monday afternoon.

The fire was located between Jenny Lane and Creasy Patch Road, resulting in Mud Creek Road being shut down from Ga. 384 (Duncan Bridge Road) to Alto-Mud Creek Road.

"Upon their arrival, they had heavy fire and flames showing," Cain said. "They made entry, had actually probably about three rooms involved. The main seat of the fire was in the laundry room."

Firefighters conducted an initial search inside the home for possible occupants.

"They finally got a family member on scene that confirmed that there was nobody home," Cain said.

Firefighters from Habersham County Station 12 (View) and Baldwin Fire Department, along with the paid truck from Station 13 (Habersham Mills) extinguished the fire, remaining on scene for about three hours.

"They had a pretty quick knockdown on the fire," Cain said. "The house is basically going to be a total loss. [There was] structural damage to the three rooms and to part of the attic area, and pretty heavy smoke and water to pretty much the rest of the house."

No one was injured in the fire.
