ATHENS - According to a press release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, earlier today the GBI responded to the scene of an officer involved shooting at the request of the Athens Clarke County Police Department.

Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 3:00 AM, ACCPD Officer David Kelley was on routine patrol and stopped at the Golden Pantry located at 2290 Barnett Shoals Road.

Officer Kelley encountered two males pouring liquor into a cup. Also observed was a firearm in the possession of one of the two males, Justin Tramell Scott, age 22.

Officer Kelley gave multiple commands to Scott when Scott reached for his firearm at which time Officer Kelley fired shots, striking Scott. After being shot, Scott fled and was apprehended a short distance later by another ACCPD officer who responded to the scene.

Scott was transported to a local hospital for treatment for a non-life-threatening injury.

No officers were injured during this incident.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation to determine what occurred during the incident. When the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Clarke County District Attorney's Office for any action they deem appropriate.
