Baseball: Carpenter, Langford lead GHS to sweep of Heritage

CONYERS — Sam Carpenter scattered five hits and fanned four in helping lead Gainesville to a 7-2 victory over Heritage, Conyers Saturday in a key Region 8-AAAAA contest.

The win gave the Red Elephants (14-3, 11-1 Region 8-AAAAA) a sweep over the Patriots (12-7, 9-5) and sets up a huge home-and-home series with Winder-Barrow next week. The two teams are tied atop the region standings and will meet in Gainesville on Monday and then head to Winder on Wednesday.

"We're going to go into the series and try to win both games," Gainesville coach Jeremy Kemp. said. "I expect a battle in both games."

Carpenter went the distance to get the win for Gainesville. Gainesville broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the fourth. Heritage tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Red Elephants blew the game open with five runs in the top of the seventh.

Jack Langford had two hits had three RBI, Faris Mance had two hits, Banks Griffith had two RBI, and Noah Bond and Jared Smith had one RBI each for Gainesville. Carpenter also had one hit.
