(VIDEO) Soccer: GHS gets big 8-AAAAA sweep over rival Falcons

GAINESVILLE — Class AAAAA No. 7 Gainesville scored four second half goals to blow open a close at halftime to beat Flowery Branch 5-0 Friday in Region 8-AAAAA girls soccer at City Park Stadium.

Breana Fair broke a scoreless tie in the first half with a goal off an assist from Aneesa Jones. It stayed that way until halftime.

The Lady Red Elephants (12-2, 9-0 Region 8-AAAAA) got single goals from Alyssa Turner and Taylor Buffington and Caroline Nabb tallied two goals for Gainesville. But it was the defense that once again proved the difference for Gainesville.

Alondra Wedding had 14 saves in goal to help the Lady Red Elephants pitch their 11 th shutout of the season. They have not allowed a single goal in region play this season.

For Flowery Branch (4-9, 3-5) it was the fifth loss in seven road matches on the season. The Lady Falcons fell 1 1/2 games out of fourth place in the race for the playoffs with two region matches left.

The Gainesville boys took control of Region 8-AAAAA with a tough victory over their arch-rivals.

The Red Elephants (8-5, 7-2 Region 8-AAAAA) led 1-0 on a Diego Porras goal early in the first half and took a 1-0 lead into halftime. Gainesville made it 2-0 with less than 20 minutes left when Dunio Turcious  found the net.

But the Falcons (7-5, 5-3) stormed back cutting the lead to 2-1 on a Bilind Amedi penalty kick with 13 minutes left. They could get no closer.

Porras sealed the win for Gainesville with his second goal with seven minutes left.

Flowery Branch will play host to Archer on April 12.

Gainesville will close out its region schedule on April 15 at home against Loganville.
