DEMOREST — For the second straight day, the Piedmont College softball team swept a doubleheader at home with a pair of victories over Pomona-Pitzer. The Lady Lions won 3-1 in game one then rolled to a 7-2 victory in the second contest.
The Lady Lions jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning of game one as ALLYSON GENTRY singled to score HALEY MCCURRY, but in the sixth inning the Sagehens tied the score at 1-1.
Piedmont saw a leadoff walk by pinch hitter SYDNEY KINARD to begin the sixth who then stole second, then HANNAH HOBAN was walked to put runners at first and second. HAYDEN SAVAGE entered the game as a pinch runner for Hoban and ABBY SMITH hit a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners to scoring position.
It was JOSIE COKER who proved to be the hero as she hit a bunt single scoring a pair to put Piedmont back on top. Coker made the heads up play to tie up the defense as she took off for second being thrown out on the play, but not before the run scored to give Piedmont the 3-1 lead.
SARAH WALKER earned the win moving to 8-4 this season with a 3.14 ERA as she gave up just a single run on six hits.
Game two was all Lady Lions as the scoring started early with Coker at it again as she hit her first career home run scoring three as Piedmont led 3-0 after the first inning. The Sagehens added a run in the top of the second but Piedmont again tacked on four in the bottom of the second making it a 7-1 game.
A Hoban double to center field scored a pair followed by ABBY SMITH driving in Hoban to put Piedmont up 6-1. The final run of the inning was Smith scoring after stealing third and scoring due to an error on the throw.
MELISSA ECKMAN pitched 3.2 innings for the Lady Lions giving up a run on five hits with two strikeouts earning the win, while AVERY MIGUES pitched three innings in relief giving up just a single hit.
