Businesses in Buford will now have an easier time when it comes to advertising sales and specials with electronic message boards, and commuters going to and from Buford High School will soon have another way to get there, thanks to action taken Monday night by Buford city commissioners.
The updated sign ordinance will allow for "variable messages" to be posted, such as gas prices, changing the minimum amount of time a message can appear before it changes.
"It decreases the amount of time from one minute to ten seconds," said Commission Chair Phillip Beard.
He said city officials have received requests from city businesses, and the new minimum time is in line with the Georgia Department of Transportation's code.
"We've tried not to deny people the use of those electronic signs," said Beard.
The planning and zoning board had recommended approval, which council gave unanimously.
Commissioners also approved an inter-governmental agreement with Gwinnett County to create a new cut-through road between Hamilton Mill Road and Buford Highway, to relieve traffic going to and from Buford High School.
The funding is coming from a Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) passed in 2009, not to exceed $600,000.
