UPDATE: 6 Republicans qualify for Hall County races

Qualifying for the May 24 General Primary election officially got underway across Georgia Monday morning. 

The Secretary of State website indicates that Georgia U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson has qualified to run for re-election. So far, he faces two challengers: Democrat James Knox and Republican Derrick Grayson.

9th District Congressman Doug Collins has one Republican challenger for his seat so far. White County retired educator Roger Fitzpatrick has filed qualifying paperwork for the congressional election. Collins qualified as of 4 p.m. Monday. 

The following candidates filed qualifying paperwork Monday to run for State Representative seats that cover the Gainesville/Hall County area:

District 29 (Rogers - retiring)

  • Matt Dubnik - Republican

District 30 (Dunahoo)

  • Emory Dunahoo -Republican, Incumbent

District 103 (Barr)

  • Timothy Barr - Republican, Incumbent

Also qualifying in Atlanta:

Superior Court Judge, Northeastern (Gosselin)

  • Kathlene F. Gosselin, Incumbent

In Hall County, candidates vying for a state court judgeship that will be vacated by long-time judge Charles Wynne were among the first to file qualifying paperwork. Also, Monday morning, Hall County Commissioner Jeff Stowe got a Democratic challenger for his Post 4 commission seat. Republicans are filing paperwork at Hall County GOP headquarters on Queen City Parkway.

As of 4 p.m., the following candidates had filed qualifying paperwork in Hall County:

State Court Judge (Wynne - retiring)

  • John Gage Breakfield
  • Michelle Todd Hall

State Court Judge (Roberts)

  • B. E. "Gene" Roberts, III 

Probate Court Judge (Laine)

  • Patty Laine

Hall County Commission Chairman (Mecum-retiring)

  • Richard Higgins

Hall County Commissioner - Post 4 (Stowe)

  • Angela Thomas Middleton – Democrat
  • Jeff Stowe - Republican
Hall County Sheriff (Couch)
  • Gerald Couch - Republican, Incumbent
Hall County Tax Commissioner (Eden)
  • Darla Eden - Republican, Incumbent

The qualifying period ends at noon Friday, March 11.
