Officials with Hall County and the city of Gainesville are considering an agreement for the upkeep of the Gainesville Square, something outlined in Gainesville's downtown master plan.
Although the square is located inside the city limits of Gainesville, Hall County actually owns the interior portion of the square.
"There's an inter-governmental agreement to be considered that would allow Gainesville to maintain the landscaping on the entire square," said Melody Marlowe, chief financial officer for the city of Gainesville.
Mayor Danny Dunagan said at Thursday morning's council work session that residents have complained about the trees obstructing the "Old Joe" Confederate monument, something the city will now be able to address.
The county had been leasing the area to the United Daughters of the Confederacy, which maintained the "Old Joe" statue.
Marlowe said Hall County commissioners will also consider the agreement, which Gainesville council members will vote on Tuesday, March 1.
"I think it's a great idea. It's a long time coming," said Councilman George Wangemann.
Council members Sam Couvillon, Barbara Brooks and Zach Thompson were not in attendance at the work session.
