Cornelia announces Saturday road closure

CORNELIA — A special event will result in the temporary closure of a busy Cornelia street on Saturday.

Clarkesville Street will be closed from North Main Street (near the railroad crossing) to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27.

The closure is to accommodate the approximately 200 cyclists who will participate in the Assault on Mount Currahee bicycle race, said City Manager Donald Anderson.

Organizers call the event, which features a 4,000-foot altitude change, "a bucket-list race in the mountains of North Georgia."

The 36-mile bicycle event starts and ends at the Cornelia Depot, and will begin at 10 a.m. Participating cyclists will follow Front Street to Wyly Street/Dicks Hill Parkway to Lake Russell. When exiting the Lake Russell area, they will follow Chenocetah Drive and then return along Wyly and Front streets.

"The public is encouraged to come and watch the event in downtown Cornelia," Anderson said.

In conjunction with the event, there will be a beer garden provided by Whistle Top Brew Co. of Cornelia.

The awards ceremony for the Assault on Mount Currahee will take place at Natalie Jane’s Restaurant on Hodges Street downtown immediately following the race.
