DEMOREST — In a game called after 6 1/2 innings due to the deteriorating weather conditions, the Lions were able to do enough early to seal an 8-5 victory over Millsaps College. Piedmont trailed by two after the top of the first but tied the game and scored six runs through the first two innings.
Alex Astin earned the start for the Lions but received a no decision after pitching three innings and being relieved by Barrett Courtwright who earned his first win. Courtwright pitched 2.2 innings giving up just a single run and three hits.
Allen Tokarz got his first save of the season after 1.1 innings pitched with a pair of strikeouts and no hits allowed. The Lions' offensive output continues to impress as they've scored seven or more in six games this season.
Trailing 2-0 after the top of the first, the Lions scored a pair of runs after Breck Davidson doubled and Evan Gresham scored then Zach Langley singled to score Davidson. The Lions' offense was just heating up as they would score four runs in the second inning to make it a 6-2 lead.
Piedmont had a total of four runs on four hits along with two errors in the second inning and chased the Majors starter after 1.2 innings. The Majors scored a pair of runs in the third making it a 6-4 game and added another run in the fourth making it just a one-run lead.
The Lions scored again in the bottom of the fourth as Griffin Olson scored on a Davidson fly out and Olson scored once more on an Gresham double in the sixth inning.
The Lions travel for a neutral site contest at Coastal Carolina on Wednesday taking on Christopher Newport University at 1 p.m.
